In Mr. Cline's class a few weeks ago. We took the day off in a way from our normal classes. Instead of continuing to read the books we were assigned and discussing them, he read us the sermon by C.S Lewis "The Weight of Glory."
Its a long sermon, but one worth reading. It is about the confusion many people have on the topic of what we desire the most. He explains after much background information, that we all desire true happiness. And through that happiness, we long for heaven, our true home that we were designed for. He explains that glory is not what many people think of as being "famous" in heaven. But more that we are honored by our Lord and Father. For it to be like the scripture passage "Well done, good and faithful servant." C.S Lewis does a fantastic job at being persuasive here, and if read by the right person aloud, can have an excellent effect. He clears up lots of points that people bring up that are not true. Such as the point of glory being having fame in heaven. He also appeals to something that all people truly want, happiness, or the greatest good. So no matter who you are, you can at least understand that he does want to convey what is the true good. He makes us want to honor God too also achieve this good. It also makes logical sense, even from a secular standpoint. Since i do not think that anyone denies that they want to be happy forever. I think it is a very persuasive speech because it gives us all a sense of calling, and that we know what truth is. I thought it was a truly excellent speech, one of my new favorites.
I really enjoyed this sermon as well. I think you explained it really nicely. I definitely agree that people tend to believe that glory equals fame and enjoy how you said that it's actually about the Lord honoring us. Good job!
ReplyDeleteC.S. Lewis is a master of language so it is somewhat unsurprising that he would be able to create a sermon like that in terms of style. He however was not really endearing himself to the audience but he did support what he was saying well.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this sermon as well, Jake. It was very good to hear the words of such an intelligent man on such a basic topic of wanting more. For a long time I have been aware of a desire for something greater that just won't be fulfilled on Earth. I was almost discouraged, believing nothing would satisfy me. But, Lewis's words give so much hope for the future.
ReplyDeleteThis sermon was a good one. C.S. Lewis did a good job at convicting and persuading as you pointed out.
ReplyDeleteIt's obvious in today's society that people desire happiness all of the time. They chase after it in many ways. However, I think there is a differenice between happiness and joy. I think Christianity gives you more joy than happiness.
ReplyDeleteA great indication of a skilled speaker is when their work not only inspires in the moment, but holds its value in the retelling, even just reading it. I must agree that it was inspiring, even if we couldn't hear Lewis himself speaking.
ReplyDeleteI agree. It was an excellent sermon. Lewis gave a valuable insight that I have found to be very prevalent in my life and it is a very correct statement made about our desire for heaven.
ReplyDeleteI think that he used a lot of style in getting the point across. But it is important that we remember what the end goal is to be with our father in a Heaven and achieve true happiness. And I think he did a good job in getting that point across.
ReplyDeleteI think that that desire for true happiness is often thought of to be earthly things, but in reality, it's quite the opposite. I agree with C.S. Lewis.
