Boaty McBoatface Rejected as Name for New Polar Research Ship

We all love funny or weird names, and it’s always fun to suggest such names to others. But when we suggest a silly name for something, often times we are not being very serious. This is not the case with some of the people in London. British scientist are currently working on a polar research ship but they couldn’t decide on a name for it. As a result they did what anyone else would do: they asked people online. The scientists set up an online poll so that citizens in London could suggest and vote on a name for the ship. The result shows just how mature a lot of the people in London are when it comes to naming something. By the end of the poll, the name Boaty McBoatface was the number one voted nam e. Sadly though, this fun name was not chosen for the boat, even though it was voted on the most. The Department for Business, innovation and skills told the public that they were reserving their right to override the poll. Instead they chose to name the boat after a British naturalis...

Using Data to Make a Hit TV Show

The speech begins with the speaker, Sebastian Wernicke, explaining to the audience that Roy Price was the senior executive with amazon studios. Roy is in charge of finding TV shows for amazon. Sebastian then goes on to explain that Roy needs to find the right TV show for viewers, a well written, addicting TV show if he wants amazon to be successful. The first thing that Roy has to do is select eight shows that are deemed worthy candidates. Then he puts the first episode of each one of these shows online for free. Because the episodes are free, millions of people will see them. While the people watch the episodes, Roy and his crew record the viewers’ actions: when they press play, when they press pause, what parts they skip, or what parts are re-watched. They then record the data that they receive and decide which show would best succeed.         ...

'Twas a While After Christmas

Recently, my dad, who is a pastor has been looking and preaching at different churches. This past Sunday, though, instead of preaching at a church, he went to the nearby YMCA to give a sermon on Sunday morning. His sermon was on the wise men that went to see baby Jesus. He started out by making the point that they were supernaturally led, they searched for Jesus thoroughly. After that he spent a few minutes talking about how the rich wise men humbly bowed down to Jesus and gave him treasures. They didn’t give him baby toys or something for him to play with, but they gave him things with a lot of value that they would normally give to a king. The next few points that he made were about what we can learn from the magi (wise men). The first point went over the fact that the wise men left their home. My dad then asked the question “What do we need to leave?” The answer is that we need to leave anything that might damage our relationships with Christ. The next point was about how the ma...

ADT

The ad that I chose is for the ADT home security system. I found it while I was looking through the mail, which is where a lot of ads and different forms of rhetoric can be seen. The advertisement’s goal is to persuade me to buy their security system. It says that it is a state-of-the-art system, and as can be seen on the top of it, it’s free! Or so you think. The ad says that you can get a $850 value free…..with a $99 installment charge along “with the purchase of monthly alarm monitoring services.” The advertisers put the paying part in small letters so its easier to miss than the giant word “FREE” across the top. But with that word alone it can be tempting to buy what they are selling. It also has a list of all of the different parts and advantages there are to this system. This adds to the feeling that I should get it. The way that the ad is set up, it makes you want to skip over the fine print and go straight to the buying. When you look at the add your eyes go straight to t...
