The Paradox of Finding Motivation through Fear

This blog theme of this quarter is about news broadcast or articles, so I looked through lots of articles in newspapers and magazines. Finally I found an article I like in New York Times . I was attracted by this article's name, it called " The Paradox of Finding Motivation, Through Fear ." And then I read this seems like a funny article, the author used some ethos, pathos and logos in it. The author was thinking about a question that his friend asked:“How do you stay so motivated and so excited about things."Because at first he told his friend a new book he is working on, a article he is writing and a hobby of adventure motorcycling in the desert. He had not considered that 'why'. Then he realized that the one aspect of these projects had to make him so motivated-the common thread -was the feeling of being in just a little over my head." Then he starts to persuade his opinion. I think his argument was reasonable. He used a concept called hormesis. T...

Michael Bloomberg's Harvard Commencement Address

In universities ' graduation ceremony, there are always some famous people have speeches. Normally people who have a speech in ceremony are give some suggestions and hopes. But at Harvard University 's 363 rd commencement in 2014, Michael Bloomberg the ex-mayor of New York City and Originator of Bloomberg L.P who had a different speech with other people had.     He was attacking the situation in American society and Universities that unorthodox ideas be repressed. At the same time he encouraged students open their mind and listen advice from other people which their even do not agree with.    At first he said great universities' purpose is not only to advance knowledge, but to advance the ideals of nation. He thinks great universities are places where people of all backgrounds, holding all beliefs, pursuing all questions, can come to study and debate their ideas freely and openly. Then he gave students his topic that how important it is for that f...

Presuppositions

I was not know I need to write a blog about speeches in chapel until last Friday, I was terrified. Because there were too many people had speeches in chapel, and I can't remember one whole speech... Then I remembered Mr.Demko who had a good speech in chapel, and we have a great relationship (that's only what I think ) . The funny thing is a week before he gave us a speech, we talked about science and religion at chapel after listened a speech. So when he showed up in chapel and had a speech, and some points in his speech are pretty much similar with what we talked about, I was so surprised. So I asked Mr. Demko give me his outline of the speech, I am very appropriate. His topic is Biblical Authority. He was trying to tell us that biblical authoruty is our last line of defense as Christians. As what he said in his speech, he wants us to believe that the presupposition that the Christian doctrine is necessary for any true meaning in life and our ultimate authority is our last l...

Colgate

I saw a Hong Kong advertisement about  Colgate . It talked about how a doctor made a lab with a group of children, and used 3D animation to demonstrate, so it proved the toothpaste can clean very dirty things on your tooth. At the end, they say they did the research in Hong Kong and most dentists as suggest you use Colgate. So, I think it is uses Ethos. They used the data, pictures and 3D animation to try to let people believe their toothpastes can clean your tooth very well, and make people want to buy their products. Be honest, if what they showed in advertisement is true, I think it was reasonable. Because, they use a lot of evidence to support their opinion and looks professional. They did lab work and research. It's very convincing . Actually, after watching this advertisement, I would love to buy Colgate, but I won't do that. Because while I think Colgate maybe a good toothpaste, it is an expensive kind of toothpaste, I don't want it  to cost much money to bu...
