Traveler's Insurance

This commercial uses rhetoric in a couple of ways but it uses one method more than anything. It appeals to the viewers emotions more then anything which is pathos. This commercial shows a girl crying in almost every scene, projecting her from being a kid to an adult becoming married. Her father was always there to wipe her tears and when she is married she is the one who ends up wiping his. It is pretty off topic, but using pathos grabs the audiences attention and the company is gaining viewers trust. They showed loyalty and I'm sure it means they have had the travelers insurance since she was born.

The Future of Creativity and Innovation is Gamification

For this quarter’s identification of rhetoric, I chose a Ted talk by Gabe Zichermann called, “Gamification”. His argument is that games make children smarter. In the beginning of his speech he goes back in time telling the audience his experience with games as a kid. He also gets the crowd interested by making a quick joke as well. Zichermann owns a company that has to deal with games heavily and he even has his own business going for it. In his argument he mentions these things in which you could arguably say he established some kind of ethos. He then goes on to mention the facts and statistics from different scientist and doctors from colleges. This says that he has done his research on his topic and he must be trustworthy. The use of facts and statistics better established logos more than any other thing in his speech. As a listener you can also tell by the structure he uses logos. He has his opening, body, and conclusion. After doing his own studies, he came to a question. “Is th...

Hysheem: Shocking Youth Message

The sermon I chose is called, “The Shocking Youth Message” by Paul Washer. He uses many rhetorical techniques to get the audience to get his point that there are many false prophets and how bad Christianity has become in the world today. He wants the people to believe that the things that go on in the world as far as christianity is completely thrown off. Before he even started his actual speech he began using repetition. He kept repeating, “and i will preach….”, to get the audience to listen to what he has to say or just for emphasis. The things he said that he would preach was to basically grab the audience's attention, and the points he started making were very attention grabbing from my perspective. When Washer does this he gets the audience's trust despite him already being a famous person and being known for doing sermons. The use of facts throughout the speech were another key. He didn't just go off the top of his head and express his opinions. He actually referr...
