Outrage Over 6 Month Sentence for Brock Turner

Since it is the last day of school and I still needed to do my blogpost, my natural reaction was to go on CNN and find a story. I saw stories about the presidential candidates and how Kim Jong Un was smoking during an anti-smoking event. Then I saw a story of a Stanford girl who was raped. I didn’t hear about the story until Wednesday when I overheard a group of friends talking about it. I won’t go into detail about what happened to the girl, but I will talk about the main controversy over the whole situation. The average time for rapist being convicted is 9.8 years and the average time served is 5.4 years, but the man who committed the crime was only sentenced to 6 months and can get out on 3 months for good behavior. Once he gets released he will be a registered sex offender and won’t be able to live within 1,000 feet of a school or childcare facility. There are two different sides to this story, the story of the man and the story of the victim. A lot of news stories were using pa...

Are Athletes Really Getting Faster, Better, Stronger?

Since I had to write a blog on a speech or debate, and I don’t really remember any speeches from school, I went on Ted.com and listened to a TED talk. I choose a talked that peaked my interest and it was about sports. The speech was by David Epstein a sports science reporter and his speech was: Are athletes really getting faster, better, stronger. David Epstein was trying to prove that athletes are not really gaining in attributes but are better because of three reasons: Innovation, Democratization, Imagination.  The first point of innovation he face an example of Jesse Owens and Usain Bolt. In 1936 Jesse Owens was the fastest man in the 100 meters, but if Jesse Owens would have ran with Usain Bolt he would have finished 14 steps behind Bolt, which is a lot in the 100 meters. This wasn’t because Usain Bolt was purely faster but because of innovations like starting blocks and synthetic tracks, Jesse Owens had to run on a cinder track which was pacted ash and he had to dig divo...

Hebrews

Admittedly I did not write about a sermon I heard in person, but instead about one I read online. I looked up short sermons online and it came up with a 16 sermon study guide. These sermons were made in the 1800’s by the American Tract Society. I did not have time to read them all, so I thought I would read the last one to see what the main point of the 16 sermons was. The 16th sermon was on Hebrews 2:3 and it was called “How shall we escape, if we neglect great salvation.” In the sermon they are showing that there is no way to salvation, without Jesus Christ. They ask how a person is supposed to escape if they reject the savior. They say a careless sinner is guilty of this. They say if you die like this you can never see the face of God. They quote Hebrews 10:26 it says “There remaineth no more sacrifice for sin.” The argument they are making is correct, and I agree with it. You need to accept that Jesus Christ died on the cross, and accept him as your lord and savior to reach the...

Chevy Silverado Apocolypse

During the super bowl a commercial for the new 2013 Chevy Silverado came on. Most people that watch the super bowl think that the commercials are the best part, because they are usually hilarious, so Chevy tried to go along with this theme. They placed a truck in the apocalypse because at that time the Mayan calendar said that the world was going to end. The man in the truck with his dog are driving through the scenes of the apocalypse to go meet up with a group of friends. When they arrive one guy asks where Dave is, and the other responds, “Dave did not drive the longest lasting, most dependable truck on the road…..Dave drove a Ford.”  Then the commercial ends by saying “From the beginning of your work day, to the end of the world….Chevy runs deep.” Chevy in this commercial are trying to put down their competitors (Ford) and show that their truck is more dependable, since it can last through in an apocalypse. Chevy in a way are trying to use logos in this commercial becaus...
