Last week I was watching TV, and saw a commercial for Old Spice. Everyone knows Old Spice for the ridiculous commercials. Although they are very funny they have no logical standpoint. Some of them say that they can make you fly, have extreme strength or even pick up any girl anywhere just by using Old Spice. Although I cannot speak from experience, I am very sure that Old Spice cannot make you fly, will not make you like superman, and will not be the only factor in getting girls to like you. Terry Crews, the poster boy for Old Spice, is a very muscular, outlandish character. They want to persuade you to believe that wearing Old Spice will make you more manly more muscular and all around better. It might make you smell better, but that’s about it. Despite the commercial being completely misleading and a little weird, it seems to be effective, Old Spice is a very popular brand and its commercials are pretty popular. No matter how strange or funny these commercials are they are effective and people take notice to them because of their strangeness. The strange commercials are the ones that get the most attention because people remember them, when you see a very muscular Terry Crews in a speedo yelling on the TV about Old Spice, it is pretty hard to forget about. Old Spice might not even be the best brand out there, but their commercials sure get the attention of the people watching it.
While browsing on Google I found an old advertisement. The ad was for Lustre-Crème Shampoo. It featured Marilyn Monroe, known for her beauteous looks and her parts in different movies. One of her movies was Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Lustre-Crème was attempting to sell their shampoo through the use of fallacies. By saying that Marilyn Monroe that tells you nothing about the actual product: it simply attracts you to the pretty face in the picture. Using this as an argument of why someone should buy your product is quite illogical. Just because Marilyn Monroe uses it doesn’t provide assurance of its abilities. They attempt using snob appeal by trying to make the audience believe that they could be like Marilyn Monroe if they use the same product as her. They use appeal to illegitimate authority by using Marilyn Monroe to promote their product. Although she herself is a customer, this is still rather irrelevant. She herself has no type of expertise in hair products and knows nothing that
I have seen this commercial too and thought it was really weird. It's funny that the ridiculousness of a commercial is its popularity factor.
ReplyDeleteThese commercials have boosted Old Spice sales and have pushed them ahead of Axe. I think that since they are so weird people remember them and pay more attention. They made me want to try Old Spice and now I dont use anything else
