Billboards have a common appearance in our everyday lives because they are used to grab your attention as well as make you think or act a certain way. Billboards are usually placed on the sides of highways and busy streets in order for many people to see them. The Elm Grove Police Department in Wisconsin uses this to their advantage by the creation of interactive billboards which were made to help spread the idea of “slower is better” while driving. Each of the billboards showed the speed of each passing driver, which was then used to represent the amount of money a person might have to pay if they were to get into an accident, how many days they could spend in the hospital due to their speed, and the percentage of having a car crash based off of their speed.
By showing this kind of information to drivers, this makes them think twice before they make the choice to speed or drive too fast for the road conditions. I think the arguments made by the usage of the billboards are reasonable because they show the speed that drivers should be going as well as the possible consequences if they drive faster. I also think the billboards are or have the potential to be very effective because most drivers do not care to realize that their driving speed can have a significant impact upon their own lives and the lives of others. I am very glad that these billboards were invented and I hope that maybe one day they will make their way over here to Pennsylvania…

this is a really interesting idea. My only question is how can the driver read it if it doesn't calculate all of these things until after the car has passed? Also I can see how this could also be distracting to drivers.
ReplyDeleteWhenever I see one of those speed signs on the road I always see how high I can get it. So for me, it doesn't do what it is intended to do, but I hope other people aren't like me and do slow down for those signs
ReplyDeleteI personally think that those signs are distracting. Some people barely slow down for lights so I think it won't work what they are trying to do.
