As a pastor, learn how to use rhetoric to persuade people to believe in God, or tell messages from God to people is really significant skill. Actually most of people go to church every Sunday, about the speech and sermon in the chapel is not new. As international students situation is kind of different for us. I have seen a wonderful sermon for a non Christian, it comprehensively used persuasion.
I had joined a new year party for Chinese students in Pottstown. Before dinner, the compere called five Chinese students together, I mean all of us. "Now I am going to introduce a special guest to you, he is my old friend, he is sixty five years old and he has been to at least ten countries to study different cultures. He born in China and he became a Christian for forty years, he will have sermon for you." He said, then an gentleman came up and shared a story about he studied in Japan. " my English name is Peter, my first time contact Christian since I was a student in Japan. Tokyo is a big city, the pace of life is too fast. You know, I went Japan to go to university by myself, this kind of experience is similar as you guys have. Missing home, missing parents, only yourself can understand this feeling Once time I went to the church on Sunday, I found out people were friendly there, we sat together as groups, talking about God, and listen to pastor, even you live in stress, when you come to the church, you will relax. The feeling is completely different from outside, honestly I really enjoyed these two hours in church. After my English improved, you will understand more in there. By the influence of love from God, I became a Christian."
This is part of the sermon from him. I want to talk about rhetoric he used in this small part. For certain people, he used pathos in his talking, everyone who came to another country to study are missing home, use this emotion, he tells us that go to the church is the good way to release stress, and if you keep in touch with God, you might become a Christian. In conclusion, this is a good sermon and it's real! Now I am enjoying going to church on Sunday!

I really want to meet him. I bet he has a lot of experience about cultures. I agree that going church is releasing stress
ReplyDeleteThat was great time and that Rhetoric way was helpful , it is a good example for persuading people by using Rhetoric
ReplyDeleteI can feel what he was feeling. I knew about being in a different country. I like how you told the sermon specifically so we are able to understand it thoroughly.
