I found a sermon on sermoncentral.com from a pastor by the name of J Jeffrey Smead. The main purpose of his sermon was that God loves us. He opens up his sermon with a story, about a little boy. The little boy is playing with a boat, he made, on a lake and the boat starts to leave his hands. He loses grip and it starts to float away, he jumps in after it and gets soaking wet, but does not get the boat. A few days later he is walking down the street and sees his boat in a store, and asks to have to have it back, but the store clerk says he has to pay for it. But he has no money so he was offered a job to work for him and get the boat. And he took it, after all the work he got his boat and was very happy and he said “You were mine the first time because I made you, and now you’re mine again because I bought you. The pastor uses this as an example for how God led the people out of Egypt, and the fact that he created us, loved us, and remembered us. I think this pastor used a great example of rhetoric which is stories. You are able to see different ways to interpret examples like God leading the men out of Egypt. He was able to make people interested with the story of the little boy, and brought all of his points together in the end.
While at the movie theaters to see The Maze Runner , I saw a commercial that featured rhetoric. The commercial begins with a young woman named Jess purchasing two Coca Cola drinks in a convenience store. One has her own name on it, and one has the name of her friend Alisha on it. The cashier watches her forlornly as she leaves, hinting that he has a crush on his customer. Jess gives the Coke with Alisha’s name on it to her friend, and together the two friends drink them. Later, Jess, Alisha and two other friends come back into the store to buy more Coke, then leave and have a good time together. Jess keeps coming back to the store with more and more friends, each time purchasing Coca Cola with their names printed on the labels. The cashier smiles and watches, but it is clear that he wishes he was with Jess. Finally, as the cashier is closing the store for the night, Jess shows up at the door with a Coke that has the name Chris on it. She smiles and hands the drink to the ...
It's a short passage, but you still did a good job on this. Because your passage is very clear, so that I can know what the pastor trying to say. We should love God because he created us and remember us.
ReplyDeleteStory is always a good way to start the sermon, especially interesting story, it grabbed my attention. For me, I would rather listen to stories associated with the sermon. You did a good job explain the story.
ReplyDeleteFor most people it can be hard to pay attention sometimes so it is good to start of with a story to peak a persons interest. Once they are interested in what the pastor is saying he can get his point across. The story does show how God created us, remembered us, and loved us.
ReplyDeleteI agree that a story is a great method to captivate an audience, and then to convey your point. Well done pointing that out.
ReplyDeleteGood job at retelling the stories and explaining the speech. Also, good job on making sure you clarified that he ended his speech well and concisely.
ReplyDeleteThis story reminds me of what my parents always teased me about as a child. At dinner they would say, "Oh we don't have enough for the check you'll have to go clean dishes." I guess they originate from the same place.
