I found an interesting ted talk titled How Humans Could Evolve to Survive in Space. In this speech, Lisa Nip describes how the human body would have to develop in order to live soundly on another planet. I chose this speech out of my love for both biology and space; it caught my attention.
This speech effectively used rhetoric- for good and for bad. She had successfully caught the audience’s attention by asking them whether or not they would live in the freezing outdoors for a couple months. She used this to lead into her talk about living on another planet in extreme weather conditions. This was a good introduction and a good use of rhetoric.
She also successfully made her scientific terms understandable. Not everyone watching would be able to understand complex scientific words- so she always stopped to make it simplified. This made the speech interesting to more people.
She did, however, have her downfalls. While her intent was to make the listeners inspired and interested in using microbes and getting the human body fit for space; she wasn’t very affective. She often times pointed out that it would be difficult and take years and be extremely dangerous. This took my emotions from excited to scared quickly. I am sure that a lot of the audience felt this mood change, too. Emotions are a crucial factor to how effective a speech is.
I really enjoyed this topic, and Lisa Nip proved herself to be very knowledgeable and easy to follow. Her transitions were great and her rhetoric was for the most part well used. Besides her lack of encouragement, she was worth listening to.
As you said, she stopped and simplified the complex scientific words. This is very helpful for me to understand her speech well. Also, I can see how she makes her listeners get into nerves.
ReplyDeleteYou did a good job at explaining what she talked about and pointing out what was good and bad about her speech.
ReplyDeleteThis topic is pretty cool, i liked how you addressed her point.
ReplyDeleteI like the way that she began her speech and trying to explain to us the scientific words. You did a really good job pointing out what was the good and bad things about her speech.
ReplyDeleteSaaay What?! We could live on another planet?! That's incredible. However, I too do agree that the whole thing about danger was a huge bummer. Great Job Anna!
