The speech started with a story about the speaker's friend whose name is Brian when he was in third grade. How he was making a horse out of clay and got upset by a girl with some thorny words, it ended up with that he had never done that any more. When the speaker told this story to his students, he found that much people have had that kind of experiences. Then he introduced a famous scientist whose name is Albert Bandora and his special process which call 'guided mastery'. This process can help people come out of fear and to be able to build their creative confidence on many others things, too. After that, he introduced a technical person named Doug Dietz, who designs medical imaging equipment. He talked about how Doug Dietz's machine turned out really well but 80% of pediatric patients had to be sedated in order to not get terrified by how it was looking. At last, Doug Dietz changed how the machine looks like and every child wants to be examined by that machine. He points out that when people gain this kind of confidence will actually start working on the things that are really important in their lives.
In his speech, I can see a lot of rhetoric used. First, he used pathos to appeal emotion. The audiences who listen to that speech will feel pity about Brian and probably will try not to do that kind of thing any more. Second, he used ethos to appeal certifications. Albert Bandora is a scientist, his process make people build their creative confidence. That makes the speech more credible. The speaker was trying to persuade us to think that he really knows how to build our creative confidence and he is trying to help people out.
In my opinion, his argument was reasonable because he used contrast between Brian and Albert Bandora and show the differences clearly. How was Brian giving up about making something out of clay because of losing creative confidence and how was Doug Dietz changing the looking of his machine to make it not scary any more because he was full of confidence. He showed the importance of having creative confidence and actually make people want to have creative confidence. He actually offered the way of having it.
It is a persuasive speech for me because of all the examples he used in his speech. I will try to be creative by using the way he offered in the speech.
That was a really good speech, confidence is important for people, and you explained Rhetoric skills very well
ReplyDeleteHis argument is.very reasonable. Maybe this is because he is using pathos in his speech
