In her speech she talks about how even those kids who live in a bad neighborhood and end up in jail deserve to be treated differently. She says that these kids deserve a chance to go college and not end up jail. By putting these kids in jail, taxpayers end up having to pay for these kids to go to jail. These kids are coming home with a criminal record, which makes it even harder to get a job. Alice Goffman uses many examples to prove what she is talking about. One example is how kids in these neighborhood play games where one kid is a cop and the other run from him. If the cop catches them the cop would push them to the ground and beat them.
She talks very passionately about her topic. She shows a lot of emotion, by pausing after she said something important, that she wanted the audience to understand. Alice gave many examples of what these kids go through. This speech seemed persuasive because the audience liked what she had to say. By adding emotion she made people feel bad for these kids.
These kids do deserve a better life, and a chance to go to college, but it is not anyone else's fault but theirs. Many of these kids she talked about are high school drop outs, so by choosing to drop out of high school the kid is already saying they don’t want to go to college. I am not saying people should not help these kids to a better lifestyle. People should help and everyone deserves a chance to college but students need to want it and work for it. Although these kids can not help where they grew up, which is why they need to shown what a good lifestyle is.
I like to see her expression Also, I love how she is passionate about this topic. I agree with your opinion that the kids deserve to live a better life
ReplyDeleteI believe Alice made people feel bad for these kids, but I also like what you think. They can not choose where they grew up, but they can choose what kind of person they want to be, and fight for it.
ReplyDeleteGood job Rachel! The speaker seemed like she used a lot of pathos, which you pointed out well. I totally agree with everything you said:)
ReplyDeleteGood analysis and good job at pointing out her use of pathos.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the truth about some of these kids is sad and it is good that the speaker is trying to help people understand it with pathos. But I agree with you in the fact that some of these kids do get into these situations themselves by giving up and dropping out.
