On the New York Times website, Isabel Kershner reported a story about a shooting in Jerusalem. Two Palestinian men open fired in a heavily populated restaurant area in Tel Aviv on Wednesday and ended up killing three people and injuring several others. One of the gunmen was shot by a nearby security guard and is currently being treated at an Israeli hospital. The other was arrested and imprisoned. The police reporting say that they believe this event was a terrorist attack. Isabel then discusses the previous Palestinian attacks at Jerusalem. During the Tel Aviv attack police searched for explosives while civilians fled the area. Isabel had five eye witness accounts included in her report. People locked themselves in stores as the gunfire continued and they called the local law enforcement. Before the gunmen started shooting, they had ordered food and were wearing black suits. Isabel then discusses an attack in March at Tel Aviv.
While the story itself is a very important and shocking story, Isabel reported it in a very disorganized way. There was logical order and she went off topic several times. She did not stay with the current story and kept going to different attacks and stories. She went forward with the story’s time table, but then started going in reverse. However, she did have some good things in her account. She stayed objective and reasonable with her story and did not let her emotions get in the way. She had five eye witness accounts and was very detailed in her account. Even though her order and ability to stay on topic was questionable, she was able to portray the story well and in a way that makes the reader feel a little bit of the fear that the people who were actually there felt.

It is interesting that the reporter would not be able to relay this newscast in an orderly manner. It seems that Ms. Kershner was given plenty of solid and supported information; her logos was present. Yet, she loses an element of ethos when she is unable to report the incident well. She is portrayed as an unfit speaker, and this could ultimately lead to disinterest or unbelief of a perfectly sound story.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very great article. It is disappointing that there is stuff like this going on today, and it is very heartbreaking. Terrorist attacks should be taken very seriously and we should be doing more to try to prevent them.
ReplyDeleteIt is important that we stay aware of these types of incidents as our world grows more dangerous both within and without our home country. It is also important that those who provide us with the news are efficient and clear in their communication. Despite the lack of organization, events such as this should never be taken lightly, nor should its importance be considered any less.
ReplyDeleteIt is terrible that these things are happening. We have to take more precautions when allowing everyday people to purchase guns and things like that to prevent them from getting in the wrong hands all over the world.
