I was watching a movie on TV, and I saw an infomercial for a garden hose. The hose was called the “Pocket Hose.” It would curl up when not in use to a very small and convenient size, but when you connect it to the water spout and turn on the water, it expands into a full size hose. It sounds good, but they began the commercial assuming that people can't perform basic tasks. It began by asking you if you were tired of your hose getting tangled up and unusable to the point of frustration with your current hose. It wanted me to feel like was also annoyed with my lame and boring garden hose that gets tangled easily. They also pointed out that anyone can use it. So this made me feel at first like it's a really sensible option since it's easy for even simple minded people. So in all, it tried to make me feel first angry and frustrated, then feel like there was an easy and obvious solution to my “problem.” It also made me feel like I was being jipped, and that I should get what's best for me. Their argument that garden hoses are hard to handle was a little bit of a reach. In hindsight, it really was ridiculous. Everyone can untangle a garden hose if they have even an ounce of common sense and patience. So I realized that I really don't feel like how they wanted me to feel. But the point of the product did make sense, and it did seem like it could work. It was small, seemed like it worked, and was affordable. So I would say most of their argument was reasonable and logical, but not all of it. Finally, in the moment of watching the commercial, it was definitely persuasive. But looking back on it, it really is not a needed or persuasive argument.

Jake, you did a great job on your blog post. I loved that you pointed out each emotion that the commercial made you feel, it helped to give a different perspective and really set the mood. You did a good job of setting the picture and pointing out the purpose of the commercial.
ReplyDeleteThis advertisement established logos more than anything else. I feel like it was not that convincing to buy because it did not establish pathos that well. Most commercials try to make it seem like it is necessary to buy their product. However, I did not get that feel at all.
ReplyDeleteI find it rather amusing, the things people can come up with in the name of "convenience." This is one of those items that would likely be seen more as a novelty than anything else. The only real asset I see is that it be stored much more easily than a conventional hose. Other than that, the things they say about it are rather pointless and repetitive. Sure it can pull an SUV (which I find questionable). Sure it can continue to extend and contract again, again, and again...and again. By the time it ended, it just made me wonder why I wasted my time.
