Almost everyone has seen an ASPCA commercial at one time or another. While I was watching one of their famous heart wrenching commercials about animal cruelty I realized that there was rhetoric in every last bit of that commercial. The commercial begins with shots of dogs in cages or beaten. Then moves along telling you about the cruelty these animals have endured and how you can help give them hope of a good, safe future. They explain to you how you can help these animals have a better future away from these hardships. By going to their website you can donate and give these poor animals a better future with a better family.
This organization is trying to persuade you to give to their cause by using Pathos. Ethos and logos are also used but not as predominately and pathos. By showing the viewer the pictures of these poor beaten animals and playing slow, depressing music along with it they are appealing to your compassion. They have good reason to take this road in their advertising due to the sad truth of their cause. Animals are beaten and locked up, and they do need to be given good homes with families that love them. The effectiveness of this commercial is obvious, many people give to the ASPCA and rescue animals from there. This commercial is simply highlighting the truth in their cause.
Sarah, you did a great job with your blog post. I love the way you organized your thoughts and pointed out each form of rhetoric within the commercial.
ReplyDeleteThis commercial is definitely persuading because, like Sarah said, what they are saying is the truth. The sad music in the background makes it that much sadder along with videoing the dogs with really sad faces. Pathos was used very well in this advertisement.
ReplyDeleteThis is so true. Pathos is used to the point where I can barely watch them. I agree with then appealing to our compassion and think you did a good job showing that the commercial is an effective one.
ReplyDeleteThis commercial is very effective. It has a great use of pathos with the music that is played. It is a very sad commercial and makes people feel really upset about the animals there.
ReplyDeleteEveryone knows how much I love pets and these commercials definitely hit me with pathos every time and they are very effective. These are actually the most convincing commercials I've ever seen and I think you did an amazing job at showing how it uses pathos so effectively.
