During chapel on last Monday, Derrick Whitmore came to preach to our secondary school. He introduced himself as a leader with the Christian organization named Shattered Studios. This developed his ethos as someone who is involved in the Christian community and works with teenagers.
He shared the message that God loves everyone and we should also show love to everyone around us. He encouraged us to show love throughout our day because it could have a great effect on someone else. We reaffirmed his ethos by sharing that he had chosen to donate money a child from China and that is one way he shows love to others. He also told a story of a young girl who needed help after being abandoned by her parents. A doctor saw her in the streets and decided to bring her to the clinic because she knew that the young girl was made in the image of God and she was loved by God. The young girl grew up and was adopted and was able to share her testimony across the United States. This developed Pathos because the audience felt joy when the young girl received help and was adopted. This example also used logos because it gave a concrete example of how loving others can really change their lives.
Derrick used many hand gestures that were not at all distracting, but still helped the audience to pay attention. He also asked for audience participation and made solid eye connection with the audience. Both of these factors helped the audience to pay attention and feel engaged in the speaker’s sermon. I found this sermon to be very persuasive because the speaker excelled in ethos, pathos, and logos.

This lesson taught by Derrick Whitmore was very good. And he definitely did a good job at establishing ethos as Christian pointed out in the beginning. And by using logos and pathos, he did a good job at convicting the audience that day in chapel.
ReplyDeleteChristian- I really enjoyed your blog! You did a great job of organizing your thoughts and pointing out the different forms of rhetoric. I liked that you gave examples from the speech as to ways to show love because it is not only important to say it, but to truly act upon it too. Good work!
ReplyDeleteI agree. He was a very good speaker, really good at connecting with people.
ReplyDeleteWell-written. I really liked that chapel and message. Derrick made multiple points that were well though out and established. We do need to love others and it may be hard sometimes but it is a good practice for us.
ReplyDeleteGood job Christian. It is sad that there is still a lot of people who gets abandoned from their family. But it is great that she knows that God loves her.
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that you pointed out he donated to the child in China, ethos was definitely being established here.
ReplyDeleteI loved that he used the story of that young girl! I think it's great when pastors tie stories into the moral of their sermon. It can really draw the audience in but also make a real impact.
