For the second quarter, we had to analyse rhetoric in a sermon. I chose a sermon by Todd White that is called “Being angry with God”. In the sermon, Todd White talks about how bad stuff happens and results in us being angry with God. He preaches that this is not God’s doing. He used many examples of rhetoric. Todd White talks in low style throughout the whole sermon to relate more to the audience. This made it much easier to pay attention and not find distractions. He used pathos throughout the whole sermon, telling jokes and stories. He told a story about spreading the word of God to a young girl at a clothing store. He told her that Jesus loves her and she replied “No, I don’t believe in any of that stuff.” Todd then told her that she is mad at God because of tragedies that had happened in her life. She looked at him and cried and realized that he was right. It was a really powerful story that had a big effect on emotion. He made plenty of jokes and made people laugh throughout the whole thing. He also gave good reasons. He gave the example that if somebody was a smoker and ended up with lung cancer, most people would think “Oh, you did that to yourself.” Todd White says that if Jesus would’ve walked into a room with someone who was ill with lung cancer, he would’ve healed them. His sermon was very logical. God is a loving father, but he doesn’t have any bad intentions. He doesn’t make people sick. Satan is the reason why all this bad stuff happens, and people tend to blame God for it. His sermon was also very persuasive. He does a great job at persuading people not to show anger towards God for the bad things that happen in their life, and to pray about it.

Sounds like a very good speaker, and he sounds like he knew what he was doing. Making the audience laugh is important i feel to relate.
ReplyDeleteYep. Sometimes, we have those kind of moments when we say, "why me God, Why?." But like you said, we got to pray for it, and it is just God testing your patience. Good job Court!
ReplyDeleteI have never thought about blaming God in this way. I tend to get angry with him even though he is not to blame.
ReplyDeleteHis use of examples are really good i think. They help the audience follow him.
ReplyDeleteI think that that is a great way to keep the audience's attention; stories, even when they still lead towards a valuable lesson.
