This past Sunday (12/11/16) my pastor did a sermon on 1 Thessalonians 1:10 “and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead- Jesus, who rescues us from the coming wrath.” His message centered around how if Jesus is coming back then he must have resurrected from the dead. If he is coming back and is bringing wrath then he will not inflict that wrath upon the righteous. Even though this is not explicitly stated in this verse we know this is true from past events. In Genesis 18 Abraham pleads with God to spare Sodom for the sake of the righteous. In the end God does not spare Sodom, but he does spare Lot’s family, the only righteous family in the city. If God would spare the righteous from his wrath then, who’s to say that he would not spare the righteous now. If Christians are being true to God’s word and following his path then we will be pared from the coming wrath. Still we need to be ready, and we need to wait for the Son to return.
My pastor delivered a great sermon, one that he obviously put time and thought into. I have been going to this church since I was in fourth grade, so by now I know that I can fully trust his sermons to be true. Our church goes verse by verse through the scriptures, he says that the best way to learn what God has for us is to go directly to what he gave us. If he can dissect the scriptures , so can we. By preaching the way he does he is equipping us to start up our own bible studies, or even just do devotions on our own.

Sarah, I was interested by you saying your church goes through the Bible verse by verse. I feel like this is not something many people practice, and while I know reading the Word in large chunks can have its benefits, so can a verse by verse breakdown. It sounds like this is a process that could really help define meaning in the Scripture, or in a way even discover how rhetoric was being used when it was written.
ReplyDeleteThat really is a great way to teach the Bible! It makes it very easy for the congregation to check his teachings and see if they believe it for themselves. This is especially helpful for a topic like resurrection and the return of Christ since Christians have different views on it.
ReplyDeleteGood job Sarah! I agree with you and your pastor's point of view and think this is a good way to look at the verse. I haven't thought about this before and think it's interesting. Good job explaining how Christ will come back in a detailed yet brief summary.
