The Sacrifice of Jesus

Every Sunday, we always go to the church. A sermon is a persuasive speaking used rhetoric in their own belief. I heard the sermon last sunday and noted what kinds of rhetoric he actually used. On last Sunday, the preacher talked about sacrifice of Jesus. His sermon was for us to actually understand why it is significant. In the beginning of the sermon, I thought it would be basic story of Jesus that I heard a lot of times. However, his main topic actually was that the fact that we are saved by the grace of God.

He used both pathos and logos in the sermon. The speaker started the speech with his personal example. A month ago, he had a conversation with married couple. They were raised in Christian family and believed in God for long time. They however could not answer the question about Jesus. They knew Jesus died for our sin, but questioned how is it important. They believed in God so that they would receive his grace and goodness. By telling this story, he related to us that there are so many people like them around us. A lot of Christians know what Jesus had done for us, but they believe in God for their own goods.

Then, he organized his three points. The first point was that God loves us so much, so he saved us. We had to live miserably in evil, but Jesus sacrificed himself for us. The second point was that this fact itself is already significant for us. We have to glorify him because of his endless love and grace. The third point was that we however only expect goods from God. God already saved us, what else do we need from God? Salvation is the most important gift from God. People do not realize how important this is.

His arguments were so clear. His conclusion was that we have to glorify God because he gave us the only son, Jesus to save us. It was effective for me, because his points were sharp. His stories were relatable and arguments were reasonable.

    When people talk about Christianity, it is true that it will be better to use personal experience to persuade people. Your preacher did a good job. Personally, I am persuaded by your explanation,

    This sounds like a good sermon. There are definitely many people who call themselves Christians but do not really know much about their faith. That was a good topic for your preacher to choose.

    i really like how you explain and organized the essay, and in the world are a lot of people that call themselves christians but they don't understand the word of God or they just try

Weight of Glory

In Mr. Cline's class a few weeks ago. We took the day off in a way from our normal classes. Instead of continuing to read the books we were assigned and discussing them, he read us the sermon by C.S Lewis "The Weight of Glory." Its a long sermon, but one worth reading. It is about the confusion many people have on the topic of what we desire the most. He explains after much background information, that we all desire true happiness. And through that happiness, we long for heaven, our true home that we were designed for. He explains that glory is not what many people think of as being "famous" in heaven. But more that we are honored by our Lord and Father. For it to be like the scripture passage "Well done, good and faithful servant." C.S Lewis does a fantastic job at being persuasive here, and if read by the right person aloud, can have an excellent effect. He clears up lots of points that people bring up that are not true. Marilyn Monroe's Shampoo

While browsing on Google I found an old advertisement.  The ad was for Lustre-Crème Shampoo. It featured Marilyn Monroe, known for her beauteous looks and her parts in different movies. One of her movies was Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Lustre-Crème was attempting to sell their shampoo through the use of fallacies. By saying that Marilyn Monroe that tells you nothing about the actual product: it simply attracts you to the pretty face in the picture. Using this as an argument of why someone should buy your product is quite illogical. Just because Marilyn Monroe uses it doesn’t provide assurance of its abilities. They attempt using snob appeal by trying to make the audience believe that they could be like Marilyn Monroe if they use the same product as her.
