The sermon I’m writing about is found on youtube where a woman makes somewhat of a rap about putting God first in your life. This speaker is talking about how no one will ever be satisfied until they put God first in their life. She refers to multiple famous people and tells how even they are going to one day be judged by God. It does not matter who you are, because one day you will be face to face with the God in charge of your fate. She wants to make us believe that we will never be above God and should remember that throughout our daily lives. The point is for people viewing her sermon to take a step back and reevaluate what they consider most important in their life. The argument was most definitely reasonable because it is true that God is above all and he should be our highest priority. Her rhetorical techniques were very influential because she targeted people who did specific things such as watching Wheel of Fortune in a lazy chair or watching Days of Our Lives. These are daily things that some people do and could hit home with them when they heard this sermon. She appealed to emotion really well by relating her points to the people listening to them.
In this Heinz condiments commercial, aired during the Super Bowl this past year, a group of dachshunds are shown in hot dog costumes running towards humans in Heinz ketchup and mustard costumes who end up catching the dogs as they leap into the humans’ arms and lick their faces. This commercial is a specific appeal to pathos as the dogs are dressed up and are meant to be cute. The phrase at the end of the commercial is “it’s hard to resist great taste” and this is stated while the dogs are licking the humans implying that the dogs like Heinz and that humans should buy it as well because the cute dogs in costumes did.
Claire- I really liked how you were able to point out rhetoric. You had really good thoughts and good organization. I also liked how you picked a topic that is very relatable to many of us. It can be very hard to put God first in the world that we live in today, but it is definitely the most important thing. Good job!
ReplyDeleteThis is a good topic for a sermon. I think it's hard, especially in today's society, to put God first and to choose Him over what we want to do. It sounded like a really convicting sermon.
ReplyDeleteNot conforming to the typical style, especially when communicating something serious like a biblical message, is an immediate attention-grabber to those who are used to the same old sermon style of speaking. It adds variation as something unexpected, and can appeal to vastly different audiences who otherwise might not have been reached. It's amazing how one can use something like rap to communicate a serious biblical message, but that just goes to show how creative people can be.
ReplyDeleteThat's cool that what she was talking about applies to real life situations of people like us. And she puts it in perspective that even really famous people that we sometimes look up to will be judged too, and they aren't perfect. But God is perfect and we should always putting him first.
