Holy Spirit Demonstration

This speech is very special in my eyes. This short sermon is about how the holy spirit plays a role in our lives. The pastor tells us about the sins and struggles in our live and reliefs us at the end to say that they can go away if we are filled with the holy spirit. He grabs the attention of the audience in the most effective way and that is by using a visual explanation. He mentions that when we are filled with the holy spirit there is an overflow, just like the one in the glass of water and this overflow spreads the holy spirit to other people. A lot of sermons can lose your attention, but I think the pastor does a great job of explaining his point in a way that shows his passion about this specific subject.

 I also think it’s great he gives credit to the holy spirit for being a important subject in the Bible. I think it’s very smart on him to use visual explanation because whenever these people see the objects he used they will be reminded of his sermon. Also, his analogies were great and I thought that was very smart. I did not like a couple things about this sermon. I thought because he used certain objects, like beer, viewers and his audience are going to think that beer is a bad thing and it is associated with sin. That is true to some point and Ephesians 5:18 says,” And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit.” Then in 1 Corinthians 10:31, it tells us that we may eat or drink, but to the glory of God. I don’t think the pastor wanted to attack alcohol in some way but you could tell he was against it. Everything is better in moderation. Overall I think the Pastor gives a lesson to be learned and that I think that is that we have to fill and surround ourselves with good things in order to be the holiest we can be.

    This is a very good description of the sermon. It could use more Rhetoric references but overall a great essay.

    I would agree that the Holy Spirit is powerful and overflows us. When you become saved you spiritually will feel the Holy Spirit enter your heart. Your whole life changes and you become a different person. As a pastor he should use the visual explanation because an audience can become very bored quick.

Marilyn Monroe's Shampoo

While browsing on Google I found an old advertisement.  The ad was for Lustre-Crème Shampoo. It featured Marilyn Monroe, known for her beauteous looks and her parts in different movies. One of her movies was Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Lustre-Crème was attempting to sell their shampoo through the use of fallacies. By saying that Marilyn Monroe that tells you nothing about the actual product: it simply attracts you to the pretty face in the picture. Using this as an argument of why someone should buy your product is quite illogical. Just because Marilyn Monroe uses it doesn’t provide assurance of its abilities. They attempt using snob appeal by trying to make the audience believe that they could be like Marilyn Monroe if they use the same product as her. They use appeal to illegitimate authority by using Marilyn Monroe to promote their product. Although she herself is a customer, this is still rather irrelevant. Weight of Glory

In Mr. Cline's class a few weeks ago. We took the day off in a way from our normal classes. Instead of continuing to read the books we were assigned and discussing them, he read us the sermon by C.S Lewis "The Weight of Glory." Its a long sermon, but one worth reading. It is about the confusion many people have on the topic of what we desire the most. He explains after much background information, that we all desire true happiness. And through that happiness, we long for heaven, our true home that we were designed for. He explains that glory is not what many people think of as being "famous" in heaven. But more that we are honored by our Lord and Father. For it to be like the scripture passage "Well done, good and faithful servant." C.S Lewis does a fantastic job at being persuasive here, and if read by the right person aloud, can have an excellent effect. He clears up lots of points that people bring up that are not true.
